FSGL 5/28 Recap
Any good stories from last week?
Hey - we teed off ON time at 5:37 and didn’t really do too much waiting.
MikeR played an excellent round - #1 net score of the year so far. Perhaps it was inspired by the color pink. He could not stop talking about the color pink. Had to do with Star80’s unmentionables. Greg 2.0 kept reminding Oops (Greg Version 1) to watch his step as he was genuinely concerned that Oops would take another front nine slo-motion tumble or two. He didn’t, although he thought about it when he sent two straight free golf balls into the woods on #6 on his way to a 9.
Oops redeemed himself on the 9th hole when he pulled the much-maligned lob wedge out of his bag and hit it less than 160 yards. Not only did he hit is the necessary 35 yards, he perfectly sent it straight up and over the left sand trap and nestled it near the pin for an “easy” two-putt. It was impressive. The lob wedge I mean. Well, the two-putt was as well, considering OldSuperSub (BillM) four-whacked the green but still beat Captain by a half stroke. I must toot my own horn here and tell you that Captain got up and down in two from that left side bunker (first bunker shot of the year!). Captain won’t discuss how pathetically he found myself in that situation.
CampCounselorJim (Scott) apparently combined a good golf score with a strategic number of 5’s to easily take FSGL Poker with a 5-of-a-kind. Captain once again finished second to be the best loser, but at least enjoyed a pitcher of beer courtesy of CCJ.
Feel free to add your foursomes stories using the COMMENT link.
C-Ya,
Captain Schmoe, CTU.

Scott Piestrak's Tip o' The Week
A very important factor in striking the ball solidly and consistently with your irons is getting the “bottom” of your swing in front of the ball (i.e., the lowest spot in the swing’s arc on the target side of the ball
This promotes contacting the ball before the ground (this is a good idea). You can develop a feel for this by scratching a line on the ground with a tee, or making a row of tees spaced about 6 inches apart, perpendicular to your target line. Straddle the line and take divots until you consistently make the divots in front of (toward the target from) the line, or row of tees.
Once you can do this you’ll hit your iron shots much more solidly and with more control.
P.S. This is fun, but do it on somebody else’s property.

Scott Piestrak's Tip o' The Week - Bonus Edition!
Long putts are difficult for both professionals and amateurs. There are three things you have to remember to be a good long putter.
First, concentrate on the distance. The first thing I do every time is step off to the hole to see how far it is. Then I stand out to the side of the putt and try to concentrate. Is it uphill or is it downhill? I’m working more on my distance rather than the line.
That brings up the second thing. Keep your mind uncluttered. What happens many times is that our minds get filled up with so many things about the putt that we forget what is important.
It’s like driving a car. If you start looking at things along the side of the road, you forget what’s important like the car that’s right in front of you. A mistake in your line can be 6 or 8 feet. But with distance, it can be 25 feet.
The third important thing just stay relaxed. This will allow you to concentrate on your distance. Take several practice swings to get the feeling, and go ahead and stroke at it. Good luck.

Scott Piestrak's Tip o' The Week
PIESTRAK POINTERS
A 3 wood may seem like a crazy choice for chipping, but it has been done for years and just recently, Tiger’s frequent use of the shot has brought it back into fashion. You can use it from just off the green or when you are quite a distance away, provided the turf will allow a shot
bouncing and running along the ground. You set up just like a normal chip shot, only use your 3 wood or even a 5 or 7 wood depending on the lie and the amount of carry you need. Choke down, use a narrower, open stance, and keep a little more weight on your left leg. The ball position should be in the center or slightly back in your stance.
The motion is primarily an arm and shoulder stroke and it is important to keep your hands ahead of the ball and not allow any left wrist breakdown. The shape of the clubhead will glide through the turf better than the clubhead in a lot of situations, and the ball will pop out nicely and run quite a bit afterward. Like any shot, this will require practice to control your distances, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a valuable shot to have in your bag!

Position Night
That’s right. Tomorrow night is our first position night. Good luck to all (except opponents of Team 1).
